Lake County’s first enclosed regional mall, built in 1977, closed in 2001. The 1.1 million-square-foot retail center housed three anchor stores and numerous free-standing buildings on 100 acres. It was replaced by Fountain Square, a mixed-use commercial center featuring shops, restaurants, businesses/offices and hotels.
The entire two-story mall and outlot buildings were demolished. Additionally, all structures, paving, parking lots, curbs, sidewalks and underground piping were removed. Also, underground water and sewer services were disconnected and any hydraulic oils used in the automotive buildings and elevators were reclaimed.
